Site selection
Select a site and a field in which crop from Brassica family had not been previously grown for they share the common pests and diseases.
Land preparation
Plough your land. Break up all lumps of soil. Mix in well-compsed manure as much as possible. Make planting ridges or holes.
Soil analysis from the site is also important. This wil enable you to know :
1.which nutrients to add to your soil and in what quantities
In most case high phosphorus and nitrogen products are recommended.
2. Which disease to control before transplanting.
Seed and seedlings selection
This is very key. Different varieties produce differently. Depending by market specifications , choose the best variety suitable for your area and ecological zone
For seedlings selection, always select health ones free from pest and disease.
Planting
Obtain seedlings from a certified propagators near
Some farmers prefer making their nursery and raising seedlings.
Seedlings are ready for after 3-4 weeks. This should be done early in the morning (6-10 am) or late in the afternoon (4-6pm) to avoid too much sunlight.
Dig planting holes 30 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart.
During transplant use products rich in phosphorus and nitrogen.
This will enable the young seedlings to have a good root network and proper vegetation.
Drench the seedling with a product that will protect the seedling from cutting pest and dumping off .
Make sure the seedlings are watered well.
