Formosa papayas remain really popular, especially in Germany

"After severe Formosa papaya shortages in Brazil due to weather conditions, production is slowly picking up a little," says Robbert van Essen, Sourcing Manager at the Dutch company, Yex.

"Though you can import these papayas from various South American countries, we get them mainly from the Canary Islands. There, production in March and April was characterized by a large surplus. Production has been much tighter again for several weeks, leading to far firmer prices."

"The market should stay tight in the coming weeks too. There will be more availability from late June/early July again and Formosa papaya remains really popular, especially in Germany," Robbert explains.

"Golden Papayas come primarily from Brazil and, like Formosa, the weather affected its production significantly too. There was a genuine market shortage for a long time, with prices reaching €18. Availability is a bit better now, and prices have dropped slightly."

“Just about our whole customer base takes Formosa and Golden papayas. So, most good retailers carry this fruit, and market vendors also find it a nice addition to their assortment," Robbert concludes.
